Musical Keys & Harmonic Mixing
Understanding Musical Keys
The musical key defines the harmonic framework of a song — the set of notes and chords it is built around. Every key is either major (bright, uplifting) or minor (dark, emotional).
There are 12 major and 12 minor keys, giving 24 possibilities. Examples include C Major, A Minor, F# Major, G# Minor. Knowing the key lets you identify compatible chords, melodies, and other tracks to mix with.
The Camelot Wheel for DJs
The Camelot wheel (developed by Mark Davis) simplifies harmonic mixing. Each key gets a number (1–12) and a letter — A for minor, B for major.
Harmonic mixing rules:
- Same number: Mix A↔B (relative major/minor)
- ±1 step: Natural key change around the wheel
- +7 steps: Energy boost / dominant key transition
Frequently Asked Questions
The musical key defines the harmonic backbone — the notes and chords a song is built around. Keys are major (bright, uplifting) or minor (dark, emotional), e.g. C Major, A Minor, F# Major.
Upload your audio to the Song Key Finder above. It uses FFT chroma analysis with Krumhansl–Kessler profiles to automatically identify the key and scale in your browser.
The Camelot wheel assigns each key a number (1–12) and letter (A = minor, B = major). Songs with the same or adjacent Camelot numbers mix harmonically. Same number A↔B, ±1 step around wheel, +7 for energy boost.
Find the Camelot number of your tracks using the Song Key Finder, then mix tracks with the same or adjacent numbers. Example: 8A (A minor) mixes well with 8B (C major), 9A (E minor), and 7A (D minor).
